How do I check the USGS gauge for a creek near me?
The USGS operates thousands of stream gauges and publishes every reading free at waterdata.usgs.gov. You can look yours up directly in about a minute, and it is worth knowing how even if you use an app for it afterwards.
The manual method
- Go to waterdata.usgs.gov and choose your state’s real-time streamflow table.
- Find your creek by name. USGS names read as “creek at nearest town”, for example “Tulpehocken Creek near Reading, PA”, so search the town if the creek name alone does not land.
- Open the station. Its eight-to-fifteen digit site number is the permanent identifier — note it and you can return straight to it.
- Read the current values and switch the time window to see the last week.
What the numbers mean
USGS labels each measurement with a parameter code. Three matter to anglers and paddlers:
- 00060 — discharge (streamflow), in cubic feet per second. The volume of water moving past the gauge. The best single indicator of whether a river is high, low or normal.
- 00065 — gauge height, in feet. How high the water stands against that station’s staff. Useful locally, but not comparable between stations: 3 ft on one creek is nothing like 3 ft on another.
- 00010 — water temperature, in degrees Celsius. Only about one gauge in three reports it, and it is the number that decides whether trout should be fished at all.
A raw flow number on its own tells you little. 300 cfs is a flood on a small creek and a drought on a big river. What matters is the reading against the historical median for this date, which the USGS publishes as daily statistics.
Two things that trip people up
A gauge measures one point. Conditions miles upstream, above a tributary junction or below a dam release can differ sharply. And on tidal water instantaneous discharge swings with the tide and can even read negative, so gauge height is the meaningful number there, not cfs.
